In February, a significant milestone was reached in the Selected RegEnergy project in Frövi as the waste heat between the Billerud paper mill and the greenhouses was connected. It's worth looking back at the entire construction process, which began in March 2022 when the project was nothing more than a rocky area.
The construction process involved blasting 10 hectares of rocky ground and ended with the fully built greenhouse in June 2023. After this, things moved quickly as the greenhouse had a full glass roof in August 2023. Until the heat connection was established in February 2024, heating pipes were laid between the paper mill and the greenhouses, and work was done inside the greenhouses.
Tomato production is set to begin in the first half of 2024, with plans to produce 8,000 tons of tomatoes in the first year. This is equivalent to 1/10 of Sweden's total tomato consumption. The heat used for tomato production is surplus heat from the Billerud paper mill, which was previously discharged without being utilized.
